Vatican: Laws Protecting Children from Pedophile Priests are 'Anti-Catholic'
Catholic Church official speaks out against lobbyists wanting legislation reforms
The Catholic Church has spoken out against lobbyists attempting to have the current laws overhauled to offer children greater protection from pedophile priest, claiming the reforms are "anti-Catholic".
Many US States have a Statute of Limitations regarding sex abuse crimes which means victims a pedophilia have a time limit to bring charges against their childhood abuser, but once that time has passed, nothing can be done.
In New York, where victims have until the age of 23 to press charges against someone for sexually abusing them as a child, legislators are working on a new bill eliminate the Statute of Limitation altogether for such cases.
With this new bill, thousands of victims of child rape would be free to prosecute their rapist once they reach adult life.
Such a reform of the current legislation would be a major breakthrough for victims seeking retribution for their horrific ordeals suffered as a child, but the Catholic League - the official organization set up to protect the Catholic Church - along with the Vatican, has spent millions lobbying against these proposed changes, claiming they're "anti-Catholic".
Bill Donohue, the head of the Catholic League, even ran a full page ad in the Albany Times-Union denouncing the legislation, branding it a "rape on the Catholic Church".
Even though eliminating the statute would allow punishment for all pedophiles
He also deflected by saying there are teachers who have molested kids at a greater rate in public schools… as if taking second place in the Child Sexual Abuse Olympics was a badge of honor.
Unfortunately, that bill didn’t pass.
It’s unclear if Donohue had anything to do with that, but it was a disappointing result nevertheless.
And Donohue did a victory lap in the most despicable way you can imagine. Look at his press release:
The bill was sold as justice for the victims of sexual abuse, when, in fact, it was a sham: the proposed legislation that failed to make it to the floor of the New York State legislature in the wee hours of Saturday (the session that began on Friday ended at 5:00 a.m. the next day), was a vindictive bill pushed by lawyers and activists out to rape the Catholic Church.
Leave it to Donohue to trash a bill that could have defended victims of child abuse, including kids who were molested by Catholic priests, and claim that advocates were out to “rape the Catholic Church.”
The man has no decency, no empathy, and no tact.
The only reason this bill is a “victory” for him is that the Catholic Church had so much to lose if it passed.
